Meal Plan or Meal Kit? A Chef Explains the Difference

By Chef Michael Rossi
Updated October 27, 2026

The short answer. A meal kit solves the shopping. A meal plan solves the deciding. SEASON is the plan. Not a meal kit. Not food delivery. Every Sunday, ten dinners and one shopping list - and nothing arrives in a box.

I get asked this all the time, usually by someone who tried a box, liked it for a few weeks, and ended up back at the takeout app. It's not a cooking problem. It's a planning problem.

If the box didn't stick, here's why

A meal kit takes the shopping off your plate. That's real. But the shopping was never what broke 5:30. The same few meals on repeat. A fridge full of food that doesn't add up to dinner. Too tired to decide by 5:30. The takeout app, open again. A box doesn't fix that. A plan does.

Why I built a plan, not a box

Thirty years on the line - Napa Rose, The RANCH, The Masters at Augusta National, and now The Beach Club - taught me one thing every great restaurant knows: the magic isn't a secret recipe, it's the plan.

And still, I'd walk into my own house at 5:30 with no plan - hungry kids, a full fridge that didn't add up to dinner. Every parent knows that moment. So I built the plan I wished I'd had, and brought a great kitchen's secret home.

"I'm not trying to make you a chef. I'm giving you the confidence to think like one." - Chef Michael Rossi

"Last night I did the pork tenderloin and even had some left over to pack for lunch. The kids loved it."- Jessica, SEASON member
"This is the missing link to home cooking. I think this will break the mold."- Neil Saavedra, host, KFI's The Fork Report

Questions people ask

Is SEASON a meal kit?

No. A meal kit sends you ingredients. SEASON sends you the plan and the decision. You shop your own store on your own budget, and you learn to cook instead of assembling a box. No box, no food waste.

How much does SEASON cost?

$25 a month, about $6 a week, plus your own groceries. Cancel anytime.

What do I get each week?

Every Sunday morning: ten dinners, five Classic and five Plant-Based. One consolidated shopping list for the whole week, sorted the way a chef shops. A prep plan, so weeknights are assembly, not cooking. Servings that scale, hands-free Cook Mode, and the full searchable Library of every dish.

How long do the recipes take?

Most dinners take about 25 to 35 minutes. The Start Here dish each week is the fastest and most forgiving one.

Is there a plant-based option?

Yes. There's a full plant-based track every week, right next to the classic one.

Who plans the dinners?

I do. Thirty years on the line, and I shop the plan like a farmers market, so it's seasonal and at its peak.

Can I try it for free?

Yes. Start with the free recipes or a real week of SEASON dinners, or the free letter below.
